Library Makeovers Rejuvenate Maine Libraries
Thursday, June 28, 2007
Every homeowner knows a re-arrangement and freshening up can bring a home to life. The same thing is true for libraries.
The larger of Maine’s 274 public libraries often have resources to update their appearances and create a inviting interiors. However, small town libraries are less likely to have the necessary time, staff, and resources.
Help is on the way.
Four small town (populations under 7500) libraries are preparing for change, thanks to a library makeover project co-sponsored by the Friends of Maine Libraries and the Maine Regional Library System of the Maine State Library.
A makeover team selected public libraries in Kingfield, New Vineyard, North Berwick, and Sebago to receive one-day makeovers. The decisions were based on project feasibility and demonstrated need.
The makeover teams include district librarians and a professional interior designer from Tucker Library Interiors.
Makeover teams are visiting each library this summer, offering suggestions and hands-on help to make space more attractive and functional. Improvements may include furniture selection, re-arrangement of furnishings and equipment, floor coverings, signage and paint color choices.
This is the second year of the Library Makeover Project, which awarded makeovers to five southern Maine libraries in 2006.
