Maine Libraries Week, January 7 - 13, 2007
Tuesday, January 09, 2007
A special celebration will be held in the Hall of Flags at the State Capital in Augusta on Thursday January 11 from 10 am to 12 noon. This event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the 4th annual Maine Libraries Week, January 7 - 13, 2007.
A press conference will be held at 10:30. Introductory remarks by Senate President Beth Edmonds and First Lady Karen Baldacci will be followed by a presentation of the library excellence awards by State Librarian J. Gary Nichols. Maine Library Excellence Awards were first given in 2004 to recognize exemplary public library services and programs. The awards are sponsored by the Maine State Library, Maine Library Association, Maine Library Trustees Association, and Friends of Maine Libraries. Awards will be presented in categories based on population served.
There will also be a premier appearance of the new Maine Libraries Mascot, who will visit Maine libraries, attend festivals, parades, and other fun events. The Maine library community adopted the Maine Coon Cat as its mascot. Help us name the new Mascot, by submitting suggestions online after January 11th at http://www.maine.gov/libraries/ or by visiting a local library. More information is available at the website, or by calling the Maine State Library at 800-322-8899.
Join us on Thursday, January 11 to recognize the libraries receiving excellence awards and to be one of the first to meet the new MaineLibraries Maine Coon Cat Mascot.
