Scarborough High School Library

Completed in May 2006, Scarborough High School with its new library was Maine's largest locally-funded building project at that time.

Background

Scarborough High is a school of 1000 students located in a coastal community 8 miles south of Portland. Approximately 17,000 residents reside in Scarborough, a town that boasts a healthy and diverse commercial base including light industry, high-tech and bio-tech industries as well as retail and manufacturing. Scarborough has experienced rapid residential growth in recent years, which has coincided with an increase in our student body from 650 in 1995 to a projected 1250 in 2009.

To accommodate the rapid growth, Scarborough High School completed a $28 million expansion/renovation project that has increased its size to 300,000 square feet. At that time this was the largest locally-funded building project in Maine’s history, and the completed work provides our students with a spacious, functional, technologically updated facility in which to learn and thrive.

New Library

As part of the project, Scarborough High School added a new library. In 2003, existing space was renovated for a library office, work areas, group project room, faculty resource center, instructional labs, and storage. A new wing to the school was also built to house the main library area with a total seating capacity of 100 and shelving for over 15,000 titles. The new 8,500 square foot Library Media Center opened in January 2005. The two story glass front and skylight, along with the interior design and physical layout, has created an environment conducive to student learning.
