Maine Regional Library System Celebrates its 35th Anniversary

The Maine Regional Library System has over 1,000 library members, including hospital, school, college, special and public libraries from Kittery to Calais. From tiny island libraries to large urban libraries, all can join the regional system.

Although most states have regional library systems, Maine’s Regional Library System had a special advantage from its beginnings back in 1973. While many states organized only their public libraries, Maine included all types of libraries in its regional system. The system is administered by the Maine State Library in Augusta.

Maine’s Rural Libraries

In a rural state like Maine where libraries are often at great distances from each other, the regional system provides a strong support network.  Ideas, collections, and programming can be shared across library lines.

Cooperation Among Libraries

Membership in the system has grown over the years to include all major libraries in the state. Clusters of libraries work together under the system on cooperative projects such as community reads, summer reading celebrations, and programming.

Area Reference and Resource Centers

Area Reference and Resource Centers are located in each of the three library districts – The Bangor and Portland Public Libraries and the Maine State Library provide assistance to citizens and libraries in their respective districts. These libraries also provide free borrowers cards in their districts.

Saving Money is Important

The system saves money and time for its members and in turn for all Maine citizens. The statewide purchasing cooperative, SCOOP, provides discounts on books, audiovisual materials, supplies, equipment and furniture. Larger libraries often share books and equipment with smaller libraries or assist with administration.

Consultant Services

Under the auspices of the Maine State Library, consultants assist with cooperative projects, long range planning, library administration, continuing education, and library promotion. Communities benefit from consultant assistance with building projects, policy development and library technology.

History

Established in 1973 under Public Law 626, the system offers many benefits to its members including discounts on books and equipment, consultant services, and interlibrary loan. Celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Maine Regional Library System by checking out a library soon!
