  1. Does my town have a public library?

Search Find a Library by town.

  2. Do I have to pay to use a library?

Most town/city libraries in Maine are free to residents of the town/city because they are supported, at least in part, by local tax dollars. Some libraries offer a "non-resident" library card for a fee which varies from library to library.

  3. What can I do if my town does not have a library?

If there is no library in your town, check with your town office to see if there is an agreement with a neighboring town for library services. The Bangor and Portland Public Libraries serve as regional library centers and provide free borrowers’ cards in their respective regions; for further information see Maine State Library District Consultants. The Maine State Library is free to all Maine residents.

You may also wish to contact Books-By-Mail, a program of Maine State Library's Outreach Services. Books By Mail provides library materials via U.S. Postal Service to residents and libraries in Maine towns where there is no library or the library is open fewer than 10 hours per week and to homebound residents. Visit Books By Mail, or call toll free at 1-800-762-7106 if you need help or have questions.

  4. My library is open limited hours. How can I get additional library service?

See answer to question 3 above.

  5. Can I use the library in a neighboring town?

Your town may have an arrangement with a neighboring town to provide library services. Check with your local town office for this information.

  6. Can I use the hospital or other special library?

Many hospital and other special libraries are open to the public. It is best to check with the library before going there to see if an appointment is required.

  7. Can my library card be used at other libraries?

Most Maine libraries are available free only to their residents, but some do offer services to others. It is best to check with the library first.
